Homeopathy - What is it?
Homeopathy is a more than 200 years old, well researched system of medicine that uses very tiny doses of natural ingredients to stimulate your ability to heal. Homeopathic medicines are known to work without side effects.
When you get sick, you manifest various signs of 'dis-ease' generally known as symptoms. These symptoms are "messengers" that let you know that your natural healing ability is working to restore your health. This is done for your healthful living by a mechanism called "homeostasis" through the survival instinct or vital energy.
Homeostasis is really quite easy to understand. When you get very cold, you might shiver. If you get very warm, you might perspire. Shivering and perspiration are two ways that the body tries to make itself more comfortable, through the process of homeostasis. When you are ill, your body produces symptoms in exactly the same way. Common symptoms like fever, nausea, sore throat, body aches etc. are all showing that the body is actively trying to make itself more comfortable or 'dis-ease free' by healing itself through those symptoms.
Why Homeopathy Works
Suppose you are well and not showing any symptoms. If you cut several onions, you will develop symptoms of watery eyes and runny nose. Discharges will be clear and burning. Now, suppose you have allergy symptoms of burning, watery eyes and runny nose. (You got those symptoms not because you cut an onion but because you have the predisposition for allergic reactions). A very small homeopathic dose of the substance which can cause those symptoms in a healthy person (in this case, Homeopathic 'Allium Cepa' = Red Onion), may help to alleviate your allergy symptoms.
Law of Similars is the basis of Homeopathy:
The above example illustrates the Law of Similars which is the basic principle of Homeopathy. "Similia similibus curantur" = "The same are cured by the same"- This means a substance in a large dose that causes symptoms in a healthy person, can have a curative effect when used in tiny homeopathic does on an individual who has similar symptoms from some other cause.
